BARNESVILLE, Ga. - Following the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) guidance for official athletic team play, Gordon State College will suspend club football and all close-contact intramural and recreation team sports and programs until the Spring 2021 semester.

The NJCAA suspended all Fall 2020 NJCAA competitive sports until Spring 2021 in a decision announced Monday.  Gordon's NJCAA women's soccer and men's basketball intercollegiate teams will be deferred until Spring 2021.   These teams will be able to participate in limited team practices and scrimmage games during the fall semester.  Additional details will follow from the NJCAA and the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA Region 17).

Club football and all close-contact intramural and recreation team sports at Gordon will also be able to participate in limited team practices and scrimmage games during the fall semester as well in preparation for the spring season. Options for recreation that are permissible will be announced in Student Life and Recreation emails to students.

Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs John Head said the college's chief concern is always going to be the safety and well-being of student-athletes, coaches and the fans who come out to watch the Highlanders.

"I know this was a difficult decision for the NJCAA to make, and I want to applaud their courage to be among the first to take this step," Head said. "We felt it was a natural progression to follow the NJCAA's lead with our club and intramural sports. This plan of action allows our intercollegiate and our club teams to continue train, practice, scrimmage and enter the spring semester ready for competition. This fall, we still plan to offer recreational options that allow for social distancing guidelines."
