BARNESVILLE, Ga. -- The Gordon State College baseball team opened the 2020 season in convincing fashion on Saturday as the Highlanders rolled past Central Alabama Community College 13-1 in seven innings.
The 2020 season-opening victory also kicked off the Justin Huff-era as GSC's new interim baseball head coach.
GSC wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as the Highlanders posted a single run in the first inning, followed eight in the second and three more in the third to build a commanding 12-0 lead.
Eight out of the nine batters in the GSC lineup had a hit in the game as the Highlanders pounded out 19 hits on a chilly, overcast afternoon at the GSC Athletic Complex.
GSC was led by leadoff hitter Jesse Sherrill (Pensacola, Fla. Tate HS) and Cole Phillips (Trion, Ga. / Trion HS) with three hits each, followed by Ali LaPread (Berkeley Lake, Ga. / Nocross HS), Derek Wylie (Warner Robins, Ga. Veterans HS), Coleman Tanner (Waycross, Ga. Ware Co. HS) and Gavin Patel (Moultrie, Ga. / Colquitt Co. HS) each with a pair of hits.
Phillips had the big hit of the game with a grand slam in the GSC eight-run second inning.
Both teams added a single run in the sixth inning to complete the scoring.
Dominic Canale (1-0) (Lawrenceville, Ga. / Mountain View HS) picked up the win for GSC as the left-hander went five innings and allowed no runs on three hits while striking out five and walking two.
Sam Wright (Newborn, Ga. / Piedmont Academy) came on for GSC to pitch the final two innings and close out the win.
GSC is back in action on Sunday as the same two teams meet in Alexander City, Ala., for a 2 p.m. ET first pitch.
