PHENIX CITY, Ala. – Chattahoochee Valley Community College (Ala.) built an early 5-1 lead and then held off a Gordon State College rally down the stretch to take a 7-5 win in NJCAA baseball action Monday afternoon.
GSC (1-2) struck for a run in the top of the first inning, but CVCC put two runs on the board in the bottom half of the frame and then added a single run in the second and two more in the third to build the four-run advantage.
GSC got a run back in the fourth to make it 5-2 and CVCC answered with a run in the sixth to push the lead out to 6-2.
GSC pulled to within two at 6-4 with a pair of runs in the seventh and, after CVCC posted an insurance run in the eight, the Highlanders plated a run in the ninth before Hunter Lane recorded his second save of the season for the Pirates.
Cole Phillips (Trion, Ga. / Trion HS) led the GSC offense with a 3-for-5 day at the plate that included two doubles and a pair of RBI.
GSC committed five errors in the game and has seven errors in its past two games.
GSC is back in action on Friday as the Highlanders travel to Panama City, Fla., for the Visit Panama City Beach Kevin Miller Baseball Tournament. The Highlanders open play vs. St. Johns River St. College on Friday at 5 p.m. and will then play host Gulf Coast St. College on Saturday at 5 p.m. and Chattahoochee Valley C.C. on Sunday at 11 a.m.
