BARNESVILLE, Ga. -- Gordon State's baseball team extended its win streak to eight games as the Highlanders swept LaGrange College's junior varsity by scores of 9-2 and 4-1 on Monday afternoon at the GSC Athletic Complex.
GSC (14-5) got solid pitching in both games, including a combined one-hitter from Kolby Johnson (Ball Ground, Ga. / Creekview HS) and Trey Felt (Lawrenceville, Ga. / Prince Avenue Christian) in Game 1.
Johnson (2-0) went five innings and allowed just two runs on one hit while striking out 11 and walking three.
Felt came on to pitch two scoreless and hitless innings to close out the seven-run win.
After LaGrange got a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, GSC got a run back in the bottom of the inning and then exploded for a six-run third to take a 7-2.
GSC added single runs in the fourth and sixth to put the game away.
Jesse Sherrill (Pensacola, Fla. / Tate HS) went 4-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the Highlanders' offense.
Gavin Patel (Moultrie, Ga. / Colquitt Co. HS) had a two-hit day and also drove in two runs and scored a run for GSC.
Sam Kuchinski (Powder Springs, Ga. / Harrison HS) had three RBI while going 1-for-3 and also walked once and scored a run for the Highlanders.
GSC also struck for a big inning in Game 2 as the Highlanders scored all four runs in the bottom of the second.
Dawkins had a double and scored a run and Scott had an RBI, scored a run and walked once.
Jaxon O'Neal (Newnan, Ga. / Newnan HS) pitched five scoreless and hitless innings while striking out nine and walking one to get the win and move to 2-0 on the season.
Luke Jester (Arlington, Ga. / Early Co. HS) pitched the sixth and seventh innings and allowed just one run on three hits to secure the victory.
