The Lady Highlanders claim an opening day 1-0 victory over the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes, with an early second-half game-winner from sophomore Jordan White.
While the Highlanders enjoyed the better of the play in the first half, it wasn't until the 9th minute of the second half that White scored from long range. Her season-opening goal was assisted by Kaitlin O'Connor.
The Highlanders defense was put to the test as the second half progressed. Freshman Isabelle Vazquez, Kayleigh McQueen, and Brooke Shavers held the back line and played the whole 90 minutes while consistently shutting down the relentless attacks from GSW.
With an almost evenly matched 5 shots on goal for Gordon State and 6 shots on goal by the GSW players, freshman goalkeeper Brooke Shavers proved to be a formidable keeper in the goal, chalking up her first shutout of the season.
Gordon State's next soccer match is scheduled for this Saturday at 5:30 in Douglas, GA against South Georgia State College.
